He bested Malak and a handful of Dark Jedi and Sith Lords on Malak's Star Forge. Oh, and he bested Bastila Shan too.

He was trained as a Jedi Guardian. And these guys put a lot of price on their lightsabre skills.
To depict Malak's lightsabre skills, you have to look at the other characters. For example, Bastila proved capable of dueling the redeemed Revan, Jolee Bindo, and Juhani atop the Temple of the Ancients and emerging relatively unscathed, albeit defeated. Shan also managed to hold her ground against Darth Malak long enough for Revan and Carth Onasi to escape.

Revan, due to his far superior augmentation. If aug was equalized, I'd favor Bane.

TBH, what actually makes Banes era better duelist's than Revans?
His Era clearly lacked in nearly all departments to Revan's, through KOTOR/SWTOR.
Their knowledge was trash, they barely had any promising force users like swtor/PT eras. Don't even know if their technology would hold up.

RoT Bane would fall to Revan without orbalisks, but lightsaber-immune armor in a sabers only fight is quite an advantage 🙂

Revan would take an all out but Bane wins sabers only.

Well, it could have ended before that, but we know it at least ends by then since your mission logs state Malak has already captured Bastila.

So, 27 seconds maximum. Not bad.

It is true that Bane's Orbalisk gives him a tremendous advantage, but it can be negated with superior saber technique of his oppponents, I believe.

If Malak wanted to use the Force, he would instantly incapacitate Bastila like he did to Revan just seconds before and Bastila shortly beforehand. The game constantly notes that Malak can easily defeat both Revan and Bastila combined if he wants to.

Thus, it seems apparent Malak was pissed off that Bastila threw her lightsaber at him (which he was), provoking him to charge at her with his own lightsaber (which he does), rather than, say, slam her against a wall with telekinesis and be done with it.

Malak has a fragile ego. 👆
