The films have stuff from Zen-Buddhism, Greek and Roman mythology, Islam, Christianity and probably a handful other religion.
So it’s somewhat of a hi-jacking of the Matrix mythology, to claim it’s Christian.
I disagree. Aside from the fact that the target audience is largely Christian (the U.S. and Europe), the Matrix is dominated by the very Christian notion of God’s divine plan. Look how many references there are to Fate, Destiny, Prophecy, and Providence. These notions make far more sense in the Christian omnipotent-God universe, than in a “free will” inclined Buddhist one.
Christianity is rife with references of prophecy fulfillment and God’s divine plan. The very notion of prayer (fundamental in Christianity) is ludicrous without the accompanying notion of Determinism (you “pray” when you know that your Fate is beyond your own control).
some eastern spirituality about the world being an illusion etc.
The idea that God is generating the universe is NOT strictly an Eastern one. According to Christianity, the universe is essentially a television show, produced by God, that You are forced to watch.
