There was no way he would have won that fight against GLC. Even if he somehow defeated Hal, the guardians would have likely defeated him (assuming he killed Hal).

I don’t think he threw the fight though.

Nevertheless, this Hal we are talking about. He pretty much defeated Parallax/Sinestro.
