Maelstrom vs Thanos

The Cosmos in Collision storyline had Maelstrom becoming one of the most powerful beings in the universe, so much so that he could rock up to Thanos w/IG and insult him right to his face; survive a blast from the IG and quip a one liner before disappearing. It was rather awesome at the time that this universe ending threat casually crossed over into another universe ending threat. What's your take on the possible outcome of this confrontation - if Maelstrom didn't have to run off and execute his world destroying plan.

A more powerful version of Mael was ultimately beaten by Quasar(as the agent of Infinity) in the very next issue... And Thanos /w/ IG was well above Eternity/Infinity-level.

ie. Thanos stomps.

Well, Starlin will eventually just retcon any Thanos loss.
