Go rewatch the scene, you'll see something wonky happen with the video speed when Will punches the alien in the side of the face. That's because they edited it a bit during the take that made it into the film because they coached Will to not punch hardly at all as a backlash against the bruise that Whirly got his left cheek. So, because Will was afraid to hurt Whirly in subsequent takes, he barely punched. In post-production editing, they sped it up to make up for that.
