Yeah, I have plenty of concerns for it potentially not doing well at the box office, even without the pandemic keeping a lot of butts out of seats. Mainly that high-concept sci-fi movies like this tend not to do very well unless they're attached to already famous franchises (Marvel, Star Wars, etc..). Think Guardians of the Galaxy (which is good, obviously and word of mouth spread so it did very well) and Captain Marvel (It was terrible, but still did well because it was attached to the Marvel Universe, not to mention a bunch of pseudo-feminist hype). This doesn't really have that established franchise benefit, but given the debt that Star Wars owes to Dune, every fu#king middle-aged, bearded motherf#cker who went and saw the new Star Wars movies multiple times better show up at least one goddamn time for Dune.

I'm trying to look on the bright side, though, and that's that the cast is great. So big, popular names like Dave Bautista and Jason Mamoa I hope will give it more attention than it otherwise would. I'm also hoping that enough people are familiar with what a fu#king incredible director Denis V. is and will feel the need to see this on the biggest screen possible.

But yeah, the pandemic is likely going to hurt box office sales, which may doom it from the start. 🙁

Another worry for Villeneuve is that if it doesn't do well it'll be the 2nd big budget sci-fi movie he'll have done that didn't generate the expected revenue. He may quickly find himself falling out of favour with Hollywood executives. Not something his high concept sci-fi peer, Christopher Nolan has to worry about.

Yeah, I don't know how interested he is in pursuing further films past the first book (I hope he is), but I'd be surprised if he wasn't totally behind the idea to push the film back a year (due to the pandemic) and to change the release date (recently) not to compete so much with James Bond. It's a dream passion project of his and so I'm sure he wanted to position it to do the best it possibly can. It would be so awesome if this sparked into a franchise to delve into the subsequent books.

I wish some studio execs would have had a bit more faith in it and just let him film the entire book at the same time and split it into two films. Like they did with Stephen King's It. I mean, have some balls... it would hype it a bit more and probably get more butts in seats. (But, on the other hand, having Paul a little older for Part 2 would probably be ideal).

Planning to see it, but a bit... I dunno, underwhelmed?

My body is ready for this. Let it begin.

I am more than a little nervous that both the studio and the director are seemingly "meh, if it happens, cool" in regards to part 2,

They do seem committed tbf. He's pegged to the spin off TV series, Dune: Sisterhood. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Totally forgot about that, is that outright confirmed green-lit or does it hinge on the success of Dune pt1?

There is conflicting info though, as I read a story awhile back where Villeneuve was not dying to do the sequel.

Dunno. Just know he's listed as the director of at least the pilot episode. Lots of these advanced listings never actually materialise though so I'd take it with a pinch of salt.

The IMAX preview has this as Dune😛art 1.

Anyway that trailer is amazing.

Creamed my pants for that trailer.

Looks great.

Spoiler:
I expect that battle in the final part of the trailer is just a vision though.

One thing I am leery of is they are really playing up the oppressed aspect of the Fremen and making Paul out as some pure hero effectively making the entire conflict a lot more black and white than it was in the books. Hopefully that's just trailer magic though.

It's probably the 'black and white' like it looks. General audiences like their 'this is the villain and this is the hero' format. Ambiguity can mean a flop, especially in a big budget film that needs to at least triple its money.

Then again, Dune (1984) had that safe format where one side was clearly evil and the other side good and it still flopped, only to gain a cult following later on.

Same. I actually got chills. This looks fu#king incredible.

I will try to resist the temptation to watch it over and over again, though.

Much as I enjoy Lynch and the miniseries, neither is Dune.

I still enjoy Lynch's film, even though it's a diet twisted version of Dune.

Never watched the mini series, though I have it. I want too, but it looks very low budget.

Have you ever seen or heard of Jodorowsky's Dune? It's a documentary on a Dune film that never was. I watched part of it, was good. This man's vision was equal parts epic and insane, eg he wanted bands to do the soundtracks for each great house, I think Black Sabbath for House Harkonnen and Led Zepplin for House Atreides. Salvador Dali was the Emperor. 14+ hour script.

I would love to hear that album. 😳

it really is vague, and doest tell much on the surface, but it is telling.
for example, paul's eyes are blue in the last scenes, meaning a lot of time has transpired since

Spoiler:
the great betrayal. so it could possibly mean that he'll take the water of life by the end of part 1.

But not necessarily, right? Could just be making the spice a regular part of his diet like everyone else.

you see, I don't hear a rock score. I imagine something more like zolimmers gladiator score, particularly "honour him" and "Elysium".
