Mammoth did take Supsrman, under (I believe) Delfalco.

Although it needs to be said, he wrote the most pathetic Superman in history. When people talk Byrne level, they're probably remembering mosting his work in Adventures of Superman, when he couldn't beat the Fearsome Five in three seperate encounters, gained his confidence back, and won with ease.

More or less he seemed to take Byrnes "Gladiator" like psionic field idea to 11.
