In reality yes, more gay/bi men means more available straight women.
In writing? It's almost always the sign that the person wants to write a character that spends all day thinking and lamenting on their gayness rather than being the actual character they were before.
It's lazy, it shows a lack of talent, and it means when someone comes along that actually has a good idea and is capable of a good execution for a character realising that they've been living a lie, it's not going to be treated with any warmth because of all the shit that came before.
