any thoughts on what each item is meant to represent?
The comic actually mentions what most of the choices are
LT - Judgement - self explanatory.
Wheel - Fate /Turning points/Resolution or the reverse unwelcome change and setbacks - So in line with the wheel of fate that we've seen highlighted in Immortal Thor recently
Jewel – This one had me stumped as in terms of tarot it symbolises temporary successes, but can also represent vanity.
Dragon - Can signify the start of a spiritual awakening - So having the dragon symbol of Dr Strange is fitting as a spiritual awakening is what he had to undergo to open himself up to the mystic arts.
Laurel wreath and skull - Theres a difference of opinion on the meaning but many believe it refers to victory over death. In other words what is the lasting legacy the person has left behind after death. The comic seems to be indicating a legacy of blood. So im assuming Ororo is seeing the cups as presented to Magneto. Its not clear.
Death - Signifies completing a chapter, putting the past behind you and moving to a new stage of life. In line with this the comic states that choosing Death allows mutants to transition passed the purgatory like Waiting Room to the White Hot Room their final resting place
Tower -Represents change and enlightenment facilitated by destruction of pretences and false security, with any move towards positive change requiring a painful journey where one must face up to the truth. Ashakes comments indicate Ewings implementation is in line with this by referring to the tower representing a journey that involves both rises and falls at which point the tower is destroyed by lightning and we're taken on a tour of the path Magneto went through. In the closing pages we see Magneto crawling across a narrow channel of hot coals with his eyes bleeding with names etched into the walls either side of him reminiscent of Holocaust memorials. These names could be those of people he has killed or those who he feels guilt over not being able to save with the bleeding eyes being representative of his inner turmoil as the eyes are the windows to the soul.
Maybe Ororo's role will be to help him overcome his guilt over his life choices so he can move past this trial. Who knows? Interesting to theorise. 😉
