Why are the majority of criminals male?

Sounds like a bit anecdotal. Generally women are a bit more kind and caring then men. It’s in their nature.

People could be kind and caring to their puppy. And still kick the neighbors dog.

Is it significant that older (middle age and up) males have significantly less contribution to crime - about the same as females?

Women are more likely to use direct aggression in private—where other people cannot see them—and are more likely to use indirect aggression in public. Men are also more likely to be the targets of displays of aggression and provocation than women.

Studies show that when this is controlled for, sex differences in aggression are greatly reduced. This means that gender-role norms play a large part in the differences in aggressive behavior between men and women.

Research also suggests that rates of physical aggression within the context of dating and marriage tend to be similar for men and women, but improperly contextualized partner violence counts men who defend themselves as perpetrators and women who have ex post facto justifications of their violence as victims.

There are also substantial differences in the treatment and behavior of defendants in the courts on the basis of gender, with women receiving more favorable treatment than men.

Sexism pathologizes the behavior of men while infantilizing women. All of this leads to disparities in rates of criminality between the sexes.

Hits the nail on the head.

A judge might go easier on a sex offender who is a woman, then a male sex offender who commits the exact same crime.

This is a form of sexism from said judges. Against woman.
