I was reading about this. It's just not possible to mess up counting software like that by accident. You have to intentionally code it like this.
In C#, for example, this is a simple countif or do while loop. You have to fetch the values for the objects where you want to store the incremental count. The very basics of this are testing various counting scenarios through simulated data including pressure tests.
This type of counting software is so simplistic that you often see a vote count software program in high school programming classes. It's one of the basics all students do.
