Anyway, Akihito was a relatively passive emperor; some say he's abdicating because Shinzo Abe is pushing for a re-militarized Japan which he doesn't want a part of.

Regardless, a significant part of MacArthur's deal with Japan was for Hirohito to renounce his divinity--Akihito is following in his father's footsteps by abdicating and following that general theme.

A lot of people still take the Imperial family very seriously; far more than say Brits would with their queen. Just yesterday a possible assassination attempt on poor 12 year old prince Hasahito while he was in school -- in an attempt to end the royal line.

If a Japanese Emperor wants to abdicate, it should be mandatory it's done via seppuku.

The guy deserves retirement. He's presided over one of, if not the most, successful nation rebuilding and modernisations in history.
