Thanos faced off against SW, Thor, Cap, Iron Man, CM, etc. all in an effort to hide the stones from him. Canon wise Thanos always wins and the universe lives in despair for five years. We will never see a more powerful, committed, and successful villain like this again. They needed the stones to have a chance against him.
