The argument seems to be that if you show up with a weapon other than a gun, you're there to attack.

If the argument is that everyone carrying any kind of weapon to these events aren't peaceful. I can see the logic in that stance. but if the argument is you can be peaceful while carrying weapons, unless it's this one specific type of weapon, then I don't see the logic.

No it's not self defense to show up to protest a rally wielding weapons. Yes it is self defense if people at said rally bring weapons after being threatened with acid attacks.
