Hodan Nalayeh, Dead in Terrorist Attack, in Somolia to Debunk Safety Stereotype
Two different perspectives on this news story:
Hodan Nalayeh, a Somali-born Canadian journalist traveled to Somalia last week to prove Somalia is “beautiful” and to challenge ‘stereotypes’ ended up being killed by Islamic terrorists.Hodan Nalayeh returned to Somalia, the place of her birth, to document the beauty and to tell “uplifting” stories, according to WaPo.
Nalayeh often tweeted about Somalia and just last week posted pictures showing how much fun she was having in Kismayo and the neighboring island of Ilisi.
“It’s so clean & breathtaking. A perfect place for a day swim with the family,” Nalayeh tweeted just two days before she was killed.

"What a blessing to be back home in Somalia after 30+ years away," Hodan Nalayeh posted on her Instagram on May 1 this year, in what she described as "her first Ramadan back home."But, eight weeks later, she was dead.
Nalayeh was a victim of a brutal terrorist attack that ripped through Kismayo, the normally serene and beautiful port city in Jubaland, about 500 kilometers (300 miles) south of the capital Mogadishu.
She was among 26 people who died after several gunmen stormed the Asasey Hotel after a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle loaded with explosives outside the hotel. The attackers battled with Jubaland's security forces for 12 hours, authorities said.
I have two questions:
1. Why did the right-wing website cover the facts right out of the gate and CNN did not? Totally not cool. I shouldn't have to go to a right-wing website to get the facts. She died trying to prove the opposite about Somolia: it's not safe and it is not family friendly. She may have died trying to prove her left-winger false-ideologies, as sad as it is.
2. What are your thoughts on Somalia and the violence? Somalia is listed as the worst place to raise a child, in the world:
