The Godfather: A masterpiece or overrated?

The Godfather has been hailed as one of the very best films in the history of world cinema for decades as a masterpiece.

However, there are some who call The Godfather “overrated”, “boring”, and “full of itself”.

What say you?

Why or why not?

Please be specific with your reasons and elaborate.

The movie is preposterously entertaining, telling Puzo's compendium of old-time Mafia anecdotes with all the gravity of Old Testament epic.

One of the classic movie ever.

I’ve never seen it, the movie doesn’t interest me

To me, The Godfather is one of the single greatest movies ever made with sublime, phenomenal, and astronomically talented acting and filmmaking all around.

I remember I was a kid when I saw it... I found it boring.

Looking forward to see it again now. Perhaps I change my mind.

Hahah! I wonder if Bada knows this. It might irk him😂

Bing smells like rejection and butthole fluids

It's been many years since I saw it, but I've seen it a couple times and I remember I watched it once with subtitles to appreciate the script more and it was brilliant.

I mean, it's like a lot of classics.. it's solid filmmaking, but won't necessarily appeal to every modern audience. It was a different time.

I've never seen The Godfather...

Am I missing something???

Love the film and the sequel.

Whomever voted "overrated"? Fite me irl, pheggit!

It can be both.

It's an objectively well made movie regardless of if you like it or not.

^wow welcome back

Always preferred Scarface to this in spades. Pacinos greatest film to me.

Always struck me as too ostentatious. I prefer the gritty gangster stuff like Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, The Sopranos etc.

Goodfellas is one of my favorite films and I can sit down and watch it at any point of the film and enjoy it; I can't do that with the GF.

But from a film quality pov, GF is superior, imo.

Oh aye I appreciate it's production quality and acting. Maybe part of the problem I have is that by the time I was old enough to appreciate it many of its aspects had become clichéd tropes and seemed a bit cheesy. Even if it essentially invented many of those aspects itself.

Godfather 1 and 2 are great.
Classics I would not consider overrated in the least.

Fair enough

I've tried to watch it whenever its been on tv, Not my cup of tea.

It deserves it's praise, but I think Godfather Part II is the greatest of the three.
