-Truck drivers tend to be conservative.

-But a growing group of them are moving away from President Donald Trump.

-They say his trade wars and a slew of tax changes have ruined their ability to make a living.

Morris Coffman has been a truck driver for 35 years. And he's been a conservative for even longer than that — his whole life.

"That said," Coffman told Business Insider, "[Trump] is absolutely a moron. His idiotic ideas will tank the economy even further."

Truckers, like Coffman, lean conservative. A Verdant Labs analysis of Federal Elections Commission data found that nearly three-quarters of truck drivers are Republican — one of the most conservative jobs in America, along with surgeons and farmers.

And truck drivers supported Trump in droves, according to an Overdrive magazine survey from 2016. About 75% said they planned to vote for Trump, up from 66% who supported Sen. Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee in 2012.

First farmers, now truckers. Intriguing!

Despite the typical cherry-picked interviews to paint Trump in a bad light, freight volumes are up to record highs:

However, freight volumes appeared to be down, year of year, for holidays, but up, overall, which sparked this slightly humorous news article title:

"Freight Volumes fall to New Heights"

https://www.freightwaves.com/news/freight-volumes-fall-to-new-heights

The issue is availability (Commercial Truck Drivers but it isn't as simple as number of bodies available vs. number of routes - it's a far more complicated equation than that but you could dumb it up to just that) is up year over year and that is driving down (no pun intended, sorry) freight costs (lower margins per route).

And a newer article shows that Trucking volume hit all-time highs in October of this year:

https://www.fleetowner.com/economics/spot-truckload-volumes-hit-5-year-high-october

Also, the particular freight sector you are in will determine how you are "faring" (again, no pun intended). Some sectors are going through explosive growths. Some, such as the West Coast due to state regulations, such as California choking the freight industry with their blackout policy, are to blame for both the lower number of routes and the hit to the job market.

Perhaps not so surprising, much of the annual increase has arisen from increased activity off the West Coast where heavy amounts of importing has driven domestic shipment counts higher. This does not bode well considering the current blackout situation occurring in California, which could prove to be quite disruptive to any activity transportation or otherwise.

Summary: cherry-picked opinions are being used to dishonestly represent opinions on Trump because this is just more Democratic, anti-Trump rhetoric. Reality is, freight is at record highs, California is partially to blame for forcing trade-routes to go to the East Coast due to their stupid blackout policy, and their are too may Commercial Drivers which is keeping down freight-to-route costs.

And truckers are still hurting:

Volumes are up in 2019, but not rates. Here's why.

Coronavirus just crashed a critical survey of trucking outlooks to an all-time low, and it's a chilling sign for the economy

Truckers still hurting. Damn.

Here are more recent economic figures and outlooks from the freight industry:

DAT: Spot load posts increased 15% last week; truckload rates respond

After slowing the previous week, the number of posted loads increased 15.6%, and spot van and refrigerated rates recovered their momentum, said DAT Solutions, which operates the industry’s largest load board network.

...

Vans near year-ago levels: After the massive spike in load posts in early March when the pandemic shutdown took hold in the U.S., load posts have returned to season norms and now track closely with 2019 levels. At 3.6 loads per truck, the national average van load-to-truck ratio is ahead of the June 2019 average.

DAT: Spot market stabilizes to pre-COVID-19 levels

After bottoming out at the beginning of May, truckload freight volumes recovered to pre-COVID-19 levels and largely returned to seasonal patterns in the second half of the month, according to DAT Freight & Analytics.
