Trump Wrong on U.S. Agriculture Exports to China

n announcing “phase one” of a tentative trade deal with China, President Donald Trump wrongly stated that the “all-time high” for U.S. agricultural exports to China was “$16 or $17 billion.” Actually, it was nearly $26 billion in 2012.

By misstating the record value of exports, Trump also greatly exaggerated the potential impact of the tentative trade deal. -snip

Soybeans is the #2 largest US crop and used to be one the biggest exports to China

Trump, Oct. 11: So, they were purchasing $16 or $17 billion at the highest point, and that’ll be brought up to $40 billion to $50 billion. … They intend to go up, ultimately, once the agreement is signed, from $40 to $50 billion. And, really, from — that was from a base of probably $16 billion, and right now it’s $8 billion. … Going from $8 billion and then to $16 billion, which was their all-time high, to $40 to $50 billion.

I'm glad factcheck.org can make heads or tales of what Trump meant and know exactly which years he was referring to at every point he made but I can't despite my linguistic prowess.

It's a word salad and Trump stumbles over himself. He's...not that bright, imo.

Albert Einstein wasn't too swift in snap debates either. 🙂

I see your angle, but it's not gonna fly, DDM.

"So, they were purchasing $16 or $17 billion at the highest point", means exactly that, Trump claimed the peak was 16-17billion. That is a lie and its purpose is to make his shit-show of a trade war seem better than it is.

This couldn't go in the Trump presidency thread because...?

Not gonna fly that Trump is an idiot?

Okay, you got me, there. He's clearly a masterful genius and didn't confuse his facts and purposefully left off year labels for every figure he presented.

He did it just to get people like you to create threads on the internet and to get people like factcheck.org to add dates to Trump's words so we could "get Trump" again.

I'd rather go with "Trump is dumb and a narcissist and he can't get out of his own way."

You have to remember Trump is both dumb as f*ck and a genius, depending on the day of the week and what he is being accused of doing by delusional leftists.

Losing an election to a guy who is dumb as f*ck must have been embarrassing for the dems. So I kinda get why they alternate.

Oh joy, the strawmen show has started.

Okay champ, sit this one out 👆

Trump Tariff Aid To Farmers Cost More Than U.S. Nuclear Forces

The Trump administration gave more taxpayer dollars to farmers harmed by the administration’s trade policies than the federal government spends each year building ships for the Navy or maintaining America’s nuclear arsenal, according to a new report. A National Foundation for American Policy analysis concluded the spending on farmers was also higher than the annual budgets of several government agencies. “The amount of money raises questions about the strategy of imposing tariffs and permitting the use of taxpayer money to shield policymakers from the consequences of their actions,” according to the analysis.

Trump Aid to Farmers $28 Billion
Department of State $26.3 Billion
Navy Ship Building (annual avg.) $22 Billion
Nuclear Forces $21.8 Billion
NASA $19.8 Billion
Children's Health Insurance $17.3 Billion
TANF $16.7 Billion
Department of Commerce $8.6 Billion
EPA $8.1 Billion
Judicial Branch $7.8 Billion
National Science Foundation $7.2 Billion
Legislative Branch $4.7 Billion
Food Safety and Inspection Service $1.3 Billion
Agricultural Research Service $1.1 Billion
Forest Service $0.4 Billion

Scuttlebutt is there's going to be another bailout to farmers in 2020.

I always wondered why we focus on these things instead of the Wall Steet and banking bailouts and the multi-trillion dollar wars.

And here I sit, still without a universal healthcare option and a tax system that is completely broken.

This is really a topic about nothing. We should prop up our farming industry to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars: it actually produces something we can eat. Unlike bullets and explosive: we can't really eat those.

Let's funnel our tax dollars into our farming industries, fighting pollution and anti-pollution technologies, renewable energies, space tech and space exploration, and healthcare.

And punish the farmers that made poor choices, of course.

Does anyone disagree?

FFS, Surt, Stop lurking in this thread and just post whatever. Why wait for DDM to give you your opinion?

What happened in 2008 was criminal against the US taxpayer.

The problem with farming bailouts, those who get bailouts are not producing; why they're being bailed out. This could be because of their own doing or outside forces beyond their control. If 'X' amount of bailout dollars netted 'X' amount of produce, cool, let's not have anyone starving in the US.

All the funneling into shit you've said, overall agreed. Not going to happen though.

Dumb people don't beat 17 other republican candidates and then go on to royally whip Hillary Clinton to become the President of the United States.

Dumb people don't turn only a couple of million dollars into a huge business empire.

Trump is anything BUT dumb.

Because robbie is an attention-whore and he wanted to make another thread that was specifically "Orange Man Bad!" The title of the Trump presidency thread does not fit that criteria.

But this is what they think. Trump is dumb but also some kind of mastermind behind all these plots.

"Too big to fail."

So let them fail and then dozens to hundreds of mid to small sized banks, who actually managed their portfolios responsibly, would fill the gaps of the large banks, very quickly.

Like I said in the post you quoted, punish the farmers who made bad decisions/poorly managed their business.

The banking industry is quite insidious from certain angles. Unlike farming which actually produces something tangible that is necessary for human life. I will never object to bailing out farming as long as it was done for natural disaster reasons or countries like China undercutting our prices.

Indeed, indeed. Sucks. I'm stuck with anti-Trump rhetoric about nothing instead of anti-Trump rhetoric about the lack of a UHC or the ending of our murderous wars.

At least the automotive bailouts were paid back. This is just throwing good money after bad.
