"Stephen King has come under fire after saying the issue of diversity should not be a factor for Oscar voters."

Stephen King criticised over 'painful' Oscars diversity comments

I'm with King. You?

Any sane person is with him.

In matters of art, film, etc, one should not choose diversity for diversity’s sake: it only cheapens the choices thereafter. One should choose art that garners ability and quality.

King's words are being distorted here. He never said quality and diversity are opposed, yet somehow that's what they took from him.

I mean, if you want to argue he's wrong about his choices, that could be a valid argument. But they literally seem to be saying if you say you can't find the best quality work in a pool of diverse representatives, you MUST be racist. As if there is no way it can be anything else, and as if King wasn't pretty obviously arguing against tokenism, a.k.a. diversity for the sake of diversity against all other criteria.

Reporting from trigger thread.

The thing is the Oscar's are always going to be a product of the culture they are judging.

You also need to be tied in some way to Hollywood. Which brings on their cultural baggage.

Animated Indy films with no ties to Hollywood get snubbed, for example.

Why do you think almost every publication pooh pooh'd the recent roasting?

i thought it was pretty obvious what he was trying to say. judge by character not colors. smh.

Point for Steve.
Equality of opportunity is what's fair, not forced equality of outcome.

Although not everyone has the same starting point and there's nothing wrong with levelling the playing field. Bo one should have to play uphill all the time.

True enough. Some have to climb uphill more than others ... though some also have stronger legs than others, which would make their successes all the more impressive.
