I am not suggesting that Americans are in large swaths socialists. The American political context is economically so right wing that even small steps towards social democracy are considered far left by pundits and politicians.
What I mean is that a large number of Americans feel that all people should have access to healthcare, food and shelter. They feel that things should be more equal and more fair. And they believe that the very richest of society should pay a higher, more fair, share of their wealth to the community they have profited from.
As for voting behavior, more than just the economic tendency one has affects that. For one there are social issues that people have different opinions on, be that abortion, gay rights or gun rights. Additionally more important than what a politician stands for is what the politician can make the voter believe they stand for.
