When Nike, the NBA, and various other organizations were censoring political speech on "free Hong Kong" resulting in crackdowns.

Isn't this kind of thing worrying, in a more general sense?

The only reason we even know about the Hong Kong silencing, is because there was so much push back. And yet this effectively ended the conversation.

This is worrying because all of our national conversations happen through corporate owned media. Celebrity and media employees are effectively manipulating politics by what they're not allowed to say, as well as by what they are.

And nearly all major social media is corporate owned. What if Facebook, Google, Twitter, CNN or Fox had high level pressure to censor certain political speech?

How is this not something we should be very concerned about?

If they have money, they can make commercial demands like those.

Since we are at war with China, I think we should slowly remove china's monetary and political tentacles from our country.

Want to make China mad? Ask Hong Kong if they want to join the US as a US Territory? 🙂

The problem is when commercial demands mix with the political.

Take the Falen Gong purges. Supposedly, the government staged self immolations to discredit them, allegedly using people that weren't even practicing.

Governments absolutely should NOT have the ability to use business ties to further a political agenda. I don't think anyone would disagree it's unethical to marry money to personal vendettas.
