When I worked for [blank] that was beholden to DoD standards, you weren't fired unless you were hourly, you were told you were being fired and signed a resignation form. Something about the retirement system and keeping their benefits/pension. I'm just guessing that Trump is required to do the same thing for his people. He can't fire anyone, can he? He can only "force" them to resign.

Is that right? Is there something contradicting that idea, out there?

Never worked for the DoD, but in the Military if you mess up badly, you’ll get a Field Grade, bar from reenlistment, and get chapter out.

There's the dishonorable discharge element which I think requires you to really really f*ck up.

Getting "chaptered out" is the way of discharging someone from the military to remove their benefits, right?

To actually get dishonorable you really have to **** up. It’s jail time also.

Almost every other chapter gives you other than dishonorable

When you get chaptered out, you can still get some benefits depending on why you got kicked out, it also depends how good of a soldier you were.
