In a tweet Saturday, the network posted pictures of at least two characters who identify as LGBTQ+ including Avatar Korra from The Legend of Korra who identifies as bisexual, and actor Michael D. Cohen from Henry Danger who reportedly transitioned from female to male two decades ago.

Although widely rumored for years, creator Stephen Hillenberg denied SpongeBob was gay in a 2002 interview, stating that the cartoon character was ‘asexual.’ Hillenburg died in 2018.

Oh, so it's taking away an icon for asexuals and trying to make it an icon for homosexuals. Because a sea sponge wants cock?

It's rumored that 1% of the population is some form or asexual. That's close to 1/100 people. That's a lot of asexuals. If every single one rose up and told people to stop shitting all over one of their beloved characters, maybe this would stop? But asexuals appears to be just as apathetic about LGBTQ+ rights as they are about sex. 🙂

This type of needless anthropomorphism of gender and sexuality is inflated as nauseam to the point of mockery of true LGBT people.

Nickelodeon only tweeted that Spongebob is part of the LGBTQ+ spectrum, which would include Asexual. Although, yeah, some fans are being dismissive of asexuality to assume that means gay. I think the only main characters not asexual were Mr. Krabs/Ms. Puff and Plankton/K.A.R.E.N.? On the other hand, an asexual character would be easier to let by the censors of that era than a gay one would. Some speculate that is why Hillenburg went with that about Spongebob.

I loved that showed regardless though, and I definitely got queer vibes from it at times. Does no one remember the Patrick/Spongebob raising a baby clam episode? With Spongebob playing an unappreciated housewife?

I'm surprised they didn't use a couple's picture for Korra/Asami though. They're
bisexual main characters that end up with each other after being romantic rivals over the same boy. They could've doubled that picture's social score easy.

It was never a surprise to me given shit like that underwear match between him and Patrick and the clam episode. He's probably queer as he kind of liked Sandy at some time, IDK if i'd say he's exclusively gay
