Former Republican House Speaker Lee Chatfield is facing 13 felony charges for financial crimes after Attorney General Dana Nessel said Chatfield and his associates used hundreds of thousands of dollars he fundraised for extravagant personal purchases."Our investigation has uncovered evidence that Lee Chatfield used various different schemes to embezzle, steal, and convert both private and public monies to fund a lavish lifestyle that a state salary could not possibly afford," Nessel said during a press conference Tuesday.
It included a $32,000 Bahamian vacation, luxury purchases, a family trip to Universal Studios in Florida, groceries, and paying off a $132,000 credit card balance.
In 2022, Chatfield, whose father is a pastor, admitted to multiple adulterous affairs, including with his sister-in-law, who was 14-years-old at the time.
During his tenure in the Michigan House, Chatfield opposed all LGBTQ protections, and was removed from his post-legislature job over his anti-LGBTQ past.
In 2020, he attempted to strip Governor Gretchen Whitmer of her pandemic-related powers multiple times. That November, he and other Republican leaders met with Trump at the White House to discuss overturning Biden's win of the state of Michigan.
Overturning a STOLEN election.
