to be clear: i do not think that she lost any previous reliable voters because if it, but she probably turned off a few undecided progressive goldilocks voters in order to gain some of those disillusioned never-trumper voters. anyway, if she didn't invite liz, i think the outcome would have been pretty close to the same. i just don't think it really helped overall

it's heartbreaking. as adam said, and as i corrected myself: the fault was on mitch/republicans for blocking the vote, but it shouldnt have come down to that. an 85+ year old has a slightly higher likelyhood of dying soon. it's not such an issue for presidents because there is always a vice president to take the slot if something bad happens. pure hubris led to her staying on through obamas first term. and now we can all have extreme anxiety over sotomayor's health since she's 70, but at least she's not taking the same ridiculous risk as was taken back then.

Yeah, I understand that they were blocking the vote and are also to blame, but she should have stepped down, like you said, when dems had the presidency and congress. She suffered multiple episodes of cancer before her last diagnosis, so she had to have known that was a possibility.
I am worried about Sotomayor. My husband wants her to resign immediately, but I don't see that happening and getting a replacement within the necessary time frame.

It was desperate, but what other choice was there? McConnell blocked the replacement for Scalia, and would have blocked her replacement as well, handing conservatives two justices. The only hope for a balanced court was for her to try to hold on. It was not some tactical blunder, it was the only choice available.

Democrats will never be pure enough to earn leftist votes, so there is no sense in trying to cater to them. Sane Republicans are winnable, and if an establishment Republican endorsement can bring them along, then so be it.
