It all starts with sociopaths starting secret clubs. I think the mods' old solution of forbidding alternate forum links was too weak to stop the trend. Even then they knew those forums could easily turn into a troll brigade base of operations.
As much as I hate AI, I think AI forum moderation (private messaging included) could be the cure for forum herpes. The guaranteed cure is eliminating PM altogether. Anyway, I think forums might make a comeback
