His stuff on The 11 O'Clock Show was really good, then they discovered they had a good thing and plastered him everywhere, it's just ritual humiliation at this point. Sacha Baron Cohen just can't carry an entire movie on his own, he was good in Hugo but he wasn't exactly the lead in that film. He did a show somewhat recently where he was an ex-con turned painter and he was asking art gallery staff for pubic hair for his brushes. It's as riveting as it sounds.

I would say the influence of Bill Burr is responsible.
I doubt it will last. It was still funny, and in his opening monologue he calls out white women, so of course Karen's united and got buttmad. Made jokes about gays too. Lots of talk about "punching down". Let me translate what it means to punch down when a leftist says it: make a joke about a cause I pretend to care about.

Maybe some genius executive figured the Left would assume they were mocking the Rights interpretation of the Left, and as a bonus they get to shut down Right criticisms of never mocking the Left?

If I had to guess, I would say the true answer is probably that SNL did this for the same reason the WaPo occasionally fact checks a leftist.
It's so they can gaslight you and say they go after both sides, when they really do not.
