Here's why:
In order to film, you have to get cleared/licensed by whatever shit you're doing. Local city, state, private businesses, etc. In order to do so, you have to be insured. Insurance for this kind of stuff can be revoked if you're not following certain practices. The actors themselves are insured, too: some are not allowed to do certain stunts.
So if a bunch of people are no socially distancing, not wearing masks offset, etc. they can lose their insurance, permits, and licensing to film. That halts all production. That might cost the producers the entire movie. And thousands lose their jobs on a AAA title. Cruise doesn't need the money. He's doing fine. Many people in Hollywood make paltry money on those movies. Some of those people lost their houses. For every Cruise in Hollywood, there are thousands of "grip", gaffer, food artists, etc. These people do NOT make a ton of money. They don't work, they lose their homes.
This is why Cruise was pissed about. Some of these folks are people he's known for ages and considers friends. And a couple of morons are going are going to cause them to lose licensing/permits for filming by violating utterly stupid COVID-19 restrictions (the only restrictions should be having a titer count and not showing up to work, ill).
Yeah, besides the whole "he is the right hand man of a legit cult leader" my main issue was how this was portrayed by some as Cruise respecting the virus or taking it "seriously".
He doesn't. He encouraged people to go to the movies in August. I personally have no issue with people going to the movies, but what he was saying was against the advice of health experts.
His concern was just about not getting shut down. It was about money and keeping people working. He is correct too.

Yup. Love him or hate him, he was trying to save idiots from themselves so that everyone could keep what little AAA movie work was going on in Hollywood. Nothing wrong with that. He could have been far more charismatic and positive about it and done an even better job of getting his message across.
I call those the "risk management" speech and I've given a couple this year. Not being a giant *sshole goes over much better with your coworkers when you have to admonish them for not following safety protocols.

Did you see 5 of the crew quit due to his rant? Apparently he made more than 1, but there is just audio for one.
IMO Cruise is the one who leaked the audio.

I think I can predict the other socks that will get approval. Bash is a sock, but people will be allowed to respond to him. Broly is a sock, but since Rob, Bash, and Whirly love trying to troll him people will be allowed to respond to him as well.
Essentially literally every sock but one is on that list lol.
To be fair I don't think he is going to actually ban anyone for responding to me. Several people have done so since his decree, including another moderator.

Some are saying this was a guerilla marketing tactic because it appears to be Cruise' "angry ranting" acting that he's seen doing in multiple movies.
It's to drum-up attention for his new movie. And everyone is talking about it. So it worked.
