Been thinking about "virtues".
Almost everyone admires the paragon of virtue, who is willing to die for his beliefs.
And most hate the back stabbing, treacherous crook.
But isn't the latter actually pretty admirable, in a way? Instead of dying for his beliefs, he manages to thrive on his wits. He screws over a lot of people in the process, but always manages to better himself.
Sounds crazy, but the fact is societies have worshipped the "trickster" gods. They very much admired the double dealing masters of manipulation.
their success reveals weakness of others who fall for their deceptions.
for example, thanks to donald trump and his worshippers, we know that the u.s. has a yuge white supremacist (and enablement/normalization) problem. thanks to donald trump, many far right insurrectionists/anarchist traitors were drawn out into the open, naked in their nefarious intentions for all to see.
apart from tempering society against other malignant manipulators, I think we'd be better off without them entirely.
