Been thinking about why politics annoys me.
I figured out it's because of the way otherwise intelligent people seem to argue the same political points, from a list of talking points. If you're a Republican, you'll be for 2A rights, against the Civil Rights Act, unchecked undocumented immigration, for capital punishment.
While Democrats can reliably be seen arguing against capital punishment, support a social safety net, be pro choice, support heavy gun regulations...
You know the lists. We ALL know the lists. People can't stop arguing along those lists.
And I HATE those lists. I can never understand WHY people always seem to argue from the same lists. You'd think more people would take an "ala carte" approach to their politics. And yes, some do. They seem to be the minority. Judging by the vocal majority..
I'm wondering if tribalism is the big motivator here. Are you against capital punishment because you, yourself, determined it's morally unjustified, or too expensive, or ineffective as a deterrent?
Or does your loyalty to a political party hopelessly bias your opinions to align with whatever the party you sympathize with argues (Or conversely do you hate some things about the other party, and this predisposed you to reject anything the other party supports?)
If I'm right, the very concept of party talking points has poisoned the well.
Maybe that was the point.

And people probably argue from the same talking points because the same ones from today remain relevant from the talking points of 10 to 20 years ago because America has been very slow to enact needed change.
