It depends though. If you want to mod your console like some people like to do, it’s best to buy the first gen since not all the kinks have been worked out yet.
After hacking, said consoles usually goes up double the price pretty quickly.

This is true. Never actually did it myself, but I know the PS2 slims were much harder to mod than the older fat PS2's.
Nintendo Wii's were considered a holy grail for modding, as it was really easy to mess with.
