Actually,. even outside of that point I'm not sure I agree scope and breadth are necessarily defining characteristics of "bad".
Is it your view that if someone messes up their own country, even if they genocided many people within their own borders, that this makes them better then an expansionist power who messes with dozens, or scores of dozens of countries?
I think many do feel this way. I see it a different way.
Every country wants to be an expansionist power. Those that never quite got there, only didn't because they never got their shit together enough to do so.
This business of taking offense at all the monstrosities of imperialism strikes me as bad on both sides. Bad on the side of those who take offense at a pretty natural, if monsterous, part of human nature (And I bet you there's some jealously it wasn't their country of origin that got to play grim reaper to the world, instead of being just another pawn on the big board)
And its bad on the people making all these symbolic gestures like taking down statues. Because ALL they're doing is making stupid, useless gestures while enjoying the benefits of their imperialist ancestors. And for what? Because someone might get angry at them and ruin their way of life?
