Supreme Court rules faithless electors unconstitutional.

Looks like the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is DOA.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday upheld state laws that remove or fine Electoral College delegates who refuse to cast their votes for the presidential candidate they were pledged to support. The vote was unanimous.

"The Constitution's text and the nation's history both support allowing a state to enforce an elector's pledge to support his party's nominee — and the state voters' choice — for President," Justice Elena Kagan wrote for the court. Laws that remove or penalize delegates reflect "a longstanding tradition in which electors are not free agents; they are to vote for the candidate whom the State's voters have chosen."

Although many Americans think that they elect the president and vice president, in fact, it is the Electoral College, an arcane intermediary mechanism dreamed up by the Founders, that formally determines who wins the election.

The system has been considered a formality because usually the winner of the popular vote also wins the Electoral College vote.

But twice in the past two decades, the unexpected took place: the winner of the popular vote did not become president; instead, the winner in the Electoral College prevailed. Thus, Donald Trump, who got nearly 3 million fewer votes overall than Hillary Clinton, won the state-by-state allotment of Electoral College votes in 2016 and became president. And in 2000, George W. Bush became president, winning five more Electoral College votes than Al Gore, though Gore won roughly half a million more popular votes.

Good news. 👆

Now they just need to make it clear that massive mail-in voting is illegal.

It should be good news. But I would prefer we eliminate the EC and replace it with Rank Choice Voting.

I’ve that multiple times, but I’ve never done any research, can you explain it? And the benefit it has compared to the EC?

Very short summary: it would undercut the current MSM two-party polarization schema, give us more options, reduces "big money" in politics, and reduces the negativity in politics/elections.

1. Ranked choice voting encourages greater civility and less negative campaigning among candidates, as well as more direct outreach by candidates to voters.

A traditional plurality voting system incentivizes candidates to engage in negative campaign tactics. Ranked choice voting removes incentives for negative campaigning and increases civility among candidates, because it fosters more choice, more competition, and a greater need for cooperation.

2. Ranked choice voting is more majoritarian and more democratic than traditional plurality voting.

Traditional plurality voting—in which each voter may vote for only one candidate and the candidate who receives the most votes wins—is marked by a pervasive lack of competitiveness. Lack of competitiveness, coupled with low voter participation, ensures that many election results do not reflect the will of the majority of citizens.

3. Ranked choice voting encourages a greater number of candidates with more diverse backgrounds and views to run for office.

Traditional plurality voting, which usually results in a contest between two candidates from the major political parties, suppresses independent and minor party candidacies. Ranked choice voting eliminates the problem of candidacy suppression and, instead, encourages more people to run for office.

4. Because ranked choice voting encourages more diverse candidates to run for office, it may, in turn, reduce political polarization.

Political polarization is high in traditional plurality elections. Turnout is low and candidates may win simply by mobilizing and championing the views of a core group of committed supporters, who are often more ideologically extreme than the broader electorate. Ranked choice voting may reduce political polarization because it encourages more diverse candidates and greater competition in local and state elections.

5. Ranked choice voting may decrease the influence of big money in politics.

While research on this subject is only preliminary, ranked choice voting may decrease the influence of big money in political campaigns.

6. Ranked choice voting saves jurisdictions money because it eliminates the need for multiple rounds of voting.

Multiple rounds of voting for a single office, including primary elections, general elections, and runoff elections, can be costly and time intensive for cities and states to administer. Ranked choice voting alleviates the burden of multiple rounds of voting by compressing them into a single election, through a process that is sometimes called ‘instant runoff voting’.

7. By eliminating multiple rounds of voting, ranked choice voting avoids the decline in voter participation that occurs in most primary and runoff elections.

Many political scientists have attributed low voter turnout to the large number of elections held in the United States. Ranked choice voting eliminates the need for multiple rounds of voting and, therefore, avoids the decline in participation that occurs in most primary and runoff elections.

8. Voters demonstrate high levels of understanding and satisfaction with ranked choice voting in jurisdictions that have adopted it.

Research to date overwhelmingly shows that voters in jurisdictions that use ranked choice voting understand and are satisfied with the voting system.

Ranked choice voting would be a fantastic improvement in the US system.

An additional improvement would also be some form of proportional representation, so that small parties could have influence, even if they are unable to win any single election outright. A hybrid system may be he best in that case.

Good.

Now they need to get rid of the electoral college.

Now they just need to make it clear that massive mail-in voting is illegal.

Mail-in voting isn't illegal, in many areas it might be the only way an American can vote. eg Trump mailed in his vote when he voted in Florida (his new legal residence)

You just don't like it because the more people allowed to vote, the worse it is for Republicans generally speaking. More voter turn out is a great thing, it's an all American thing 🙂

So ranked choice voting is essentially a top list?

The same people can still dominate a list. I bet the name Clinton or Bush would be near the top of any list you can design.

It's why we should go with the popular vote and let individual Americans decide the outcomes of our elections. One American = one vote, all equal.

That's a terrible and outdated system.

Update to remote electronic, Rank Choice Voting.

Making mail in voting illegal just shits on all our military serving over seas as well.

Make presidential elections a national holiday.

No. He doesn't like mail in voting because Trump said so. He doesn't know why. Just that Trump doesn't like it and that's enough.

Of course robbie is all for massive mail-in voting because he knows it'll make it far easier for his side (the democrats) to cheat.

If it is allowed, then you can expect pretty much all of us on the right to not accept the results if they end-up showing that Biden "won."

Just sayin', robbie.. don't cry like a little baby when people en masse rightly cry 'foul' if that's how Biden "wins". We'll never accept him as president if that's the only way he can win, sorry.

And, honestly, let's be real here: the only way Biden has a chance in Hell of beating Trump is by cheating.

Just like Vsbattles!

Look at all the choice there.

Like Superman vs Hulk.

And Thor vs Superman.

And Hulk vs Blue Marel.

And Hulk vs Hulk.

And Superman Prime vs Worldbreaker Hulk.

And you even get Flash and Wonder Woman. Often fighting Superman and Hulk.

Explain how that cheating would work exactly.

As far as I know, no one is against all mail-in voting. Just massive mail-in voting which us why I specifically mentioned that. Of course people that have a legitimate reason for not being able to vote in person has every right to mail-in their votes.

People will say that Covid is a "legitimate reason" but nope, it's not.

And having that BS excuse available is just more evidence for what I already knew: that this virus was intentionally released onto the public in an attempt to severely hurt Trump's chances in 2020 or even try to get him to resign before the election even happens.
