Flying with a Cat

Going cross country to find work
Just wondering if anyone here has flown with a cat, any tips or tricks to calm them down or how did the people around you deal with them

Can you even fly with the cat in the cabin with you, I thought they had to toss it in the cargo hold with the rest of the pets?
