The Republican base is a lot less homogenous these days compared to the Democrats. You've got libertardians, neocons, the alt-right etc etc and they all hate each other. So it's quite likely that there are a lot of people who identify as "center" out of spite for the Republican party as a whole while still carrying many right-leaning views and considering the democrats the larger evil.

Trump is actually quite intelligent especially in matters of business. Just because he is not the most eloquent speaker around doesn't mean he's dumb. The way a person talks and his vocabulary aren't the only indicators of his intelligence.

He became president of the most powerful nation on earth despite the fact that the entire MSM and the political establishment were against him. Even many in his own party opposed him. He also created a huge business empire starting out with only a few million dollars.
