What would you do if you won 5 million tax free?

I'd take 3 million and invest it.

Using the 4% rule I'd have $120,000 a year to live on.

A very good life.

Then the other 2 million, I'd give to family and friends.

Spend it all on hookers and cocaine, of course!

This is the mistake that a lot of people make. They purchase an expensive home outright, only to lose it later, because they cannot afford the property taxes. If you want to purchase a home, and set aside a fund to pay the taxes for perpetuity, then you are going to have to aim much lower.

Honest answer - I would buy several houses and rent them out to people. Basically become a landlord. Maybe an apartment building too. I'd buy a decent house for myself but something worth less than $1 million.

You'd definitely be a sex-for-rent landlord.

I'd buy lots of animals.
