Civil War Within The GOP

Over 100 Republican Former Officials Threaten New Party

More than 100 influential Republicans plan to release a call for reforms within the GOP alongside a threat to form a new party if change isn't forthcoming, a person familiar with the effort said.

The statement, set to be released Thursday, involves a "Call for American Renewal," a credo that declares that it is imperative to "either reimagine a party dedicated to our founding ideals or else hasten the creation of such an alternative." The push will include 13 yet-to-be-revealed principles that the signatories want the GOP to embrace.

This is not the first group to form as the pro-Trump and traditional conservative factions of the Republican Party remain at loggerheads. The new effort comes as a vote looms to oust Liz Cheney of Wyoming from the number three House Republican leadership post for her refusal to stay silent about Donald Trump's repeated election lies and his role in the January 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol.

One of the organizers is Miles Taylor, a former Trump official who, as "Anonymous," wrote an op-ed in The New York Times blasting the Trump administration in 2018.

"We're going give the GOP one last chance to get its act together and moderate, but we're not going to hold our breath. We're ready to get out there and fight against the radical elements in the party to try to excise those elements from within the GOP and our national politics and to try to invest in the deeper pro-democracy bench."

Taylor suggested that the nascent movement will work to back candidates who support its principles, whether they are moderates or independents.

"Enough is enough, and the GOP has had enough time to decide whether it's going to separate itself from a man who is a chronic loser," he said, referring to Trump, predicting a "raging civil war" if the rest of the party doesn't get on board.

So the GOP may actually tear itself apart?

Not so Grand anymore. 🙂

Couldn't happen to a nicer group

Hey, you know how the rest of the world says there is no American left?

What if the Democrats were really the far right all along, and the Republicans are so far right to them they're off the deep end? Maybe if the GoP dies, we can make a real left party to counter the "not really left" Democrats?

It sounds like you're coping :/

I was just thinking about a Freudian slip a guy on CNN made calling the left the "far right".

What if it "wasn't" a slip, and we've all been duped by the far right all along? 🙂

I mean, the man did say "Why worry about opposition when you can become it".

Without at least free healthcare for all (which even our Tories would never dare completely eliminate), your democrats dont really seem that left to the rest of the world. I agree to that. Centre at best (with some culture war wokeness stuff to give the illusion of leftists).

That said, you clearly do have some actual lefties in the party, who seem to have had some kind of positive influence. Whereas your Republicans dont even pretend to care about the average working man at all. I mean not even one of them voted for a decent cheque to people 1 year into a pandemic. Add Trump to the mix, and yeah your Republicans did just seem crazy level far right.

Good points.

It just seems like the real lefties don't really win over the new-liberals. I mean, you could argue Obamacare is something the health care industry wants because it mandates everyone has insurance, which means more money in the coffer's of private insurers.

Somehow, it seems like no matter what, big business sits on their perch and never really gets threatened by our social politics. And that's not good... It makes our government look like a figurehead for big money interests.

Actually as far as I'm aware Insurance companies didn't want Obamacare because it forced them to take on people they know they would lose money over.

Then they started to throw a tantrum saying this is why they're offering shittier options now even though it was just to earn higher returns for their shareholders.

Lines like this have always baffled me. A country inevitably, and rightfully, changes over time from many of its founding ideals. That there is always such a fervent call to stick to them, after centuries of change and innovation, just bakes my noodle.

Re: Re: Over 100 Republican Former Officials Threaten New Party

That's why they call themselves "conservatives", though it should be noted they pick and choose what they want to conserve. eg A return to the 1950s, cos of the perceived 'American utopia', except the higher tax rate to the wealthy back them, not that aspect.

I think this was inevitable post Trump. There was going to be a lot of "soul searching" among some of the GOP while others were going to try to continue riding Trump's coat tails for as long as it would be politically beneficial for them and it would inevitably cause conflict.

Shows that Trump still has a great deal of influence, which is unique for a losing candidate but his loss was also unique in that despite losing he got a great deal of votes.

He'll never be as a good as JC though.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, the new face of the GOP, claimed that being asked to wear a mask during a pandemic is the same as the Holocaust, Nazis making Jews wear badges and committing genocide.

"You know, we can look back at a time in history where people were told to wear a gold star, and they were definitely treated like second class citizens, so much so that they were put in trains and taken to gas chambers in Nazi Germany." -MTG

Some Republicans have spoken out, but it's very, very, very few.

For her, the good ol' days were during the Ice Age, because she looks like a ****ing Cro Magnon.

Marjorie Taylor Greene is working hard to make herself the worst person in all of America. I wonder what her end game is. Is it just the notion that there's no such thing as bad publicity? That keeping your name current in the media is all that matters? Or is she just eyeing that future career as a host for Fox News, Newsmax etc.?

What an idiot she is.

I mean, its not like the Left freely throws around Holocaust iconography with impunity because they attack Democrat opposition. 🙂

She, like many others are following Donald Trump's handbook it seems. They are just overlooking one thing: Trump's B.S. worked for a while, until it stopped. And everything has slid backwards for him since.

He and others might be appealing to their base, but that base is shrinking.
