I would argue that is what makes the first Predator movie work so well and partially why the rest don’t hold a candle to it. I hate to use the word “subversion” but it perfectly fits here, the film acts as a subversion of the traditional 80’s action movies. The first half of the film starts like a standard 80’s action movie. You’ve got these big men with big guns (and even bigger “guns”) mowing down mooks while cracking jokes. They even have some heavyweights like Arnold, Jesse Ventura, and Carl Weathers. So it’s quite a twist when suddenly, they are no longer invulnerable action heroes but instead become mooks themselves.
^^^That's why it worked for me too.
You reminded me of the old movie review show w. the thumbs up/down guys. I always enjoyed their banter but they also taught me early on that they the reviewers have different goals than I the fan.
Some of the things they say about the average moviegoers in the Predator review really stuck w. me.
It’s why I don’t put much stock in reviews today.
