It's Baz Luhrmann, though. Be prepared for obnoxious over-the-topness.

Really good film. Amazing performances from Butler and Hanks.

Mixed bag for me, though overall enjoyed.

Dude who played Elvis was great with the look, voice and mannerisms, Hanks was solid as usual, his accent wasn't though.

What I didn't care for was some of the over-stylized bits and the use of modern music in 50-60s settings, took me out of the fantasy.

yeah, agree. Didn't stop me enjoying as you said yourself.

finally watched.. pretty good film.. butler was pretty decent and tom hanks was great, his accent notwithstanding.. i have no idea if this will win any awards

Bingo. My feelings exactly. The split screens and such. Less is more.

And yes, that is a huge pet peeve of mine. If you're doing a period piece, I don't want Nikki Minaj or whoever the f#ck it was transported to the time and place.

That's why it lost points in my book. 7/10.
