Beau Is Afraid (2023) Joaquin Phoenix
New Ari Aster film. Looks wild and odd. But will have to see, because his other two films are so good.

I saw it, I enjoyed it quite a bit. However, i would guess this would be one that is not for everyone. It’s three hours long and is borderline absurdist with how abstract it gets with some of its themes. It starts out as a pretty straightforward allegory for anxiety, then about an hour in it just goes completely off the rails.
Watched this and liked it for what it was. I think I enjoyed the first act more than anything else. But Ari Aster is a solid director, so it was entertaining for sure. I sensed that it would be a pretty depressing movie (and I was totally right), so I played down to watch it while sick. I tend to like depressing stuff for when I'm not feeling great. Heh.

You are not wrong about that! The middle act went super artsy fartsy.
Ari Aster shouldn't be surprised by the audience reception...
Ari Aster Was ‘Disappointed’ by ‘Beau Is Afraid’ Reception
Personally I do think the film is largely quite brilliant. Even the artsy middle act is a very trippy and creative experiment in story-telling for a character, but I do think it would have played better for audiences had it been a bit more straight forward, or skipped altogether. He should have done a more conventional theatrical cut and then gone full-artsy-fartsy with a blu-ray director's cut. This is exactly the kind of film I would welcome two different cuts for.
