He was ahead of Biden, but he was behind Buttigeig, who was the delegate leader until he withdrew and endorsed Biden. Buttigeig withdrew, because he understands math: after Super Tuesday, Biden would have an insurmountable delegate lead, so there would be no sense in staying in the race. It is better to endorse the eventual nominee, instead of fighting a losing battle, and being a drag on the eventual Democratic candidate. Something Sanders did not learn in '16 or '20. Remaining in the race, and making the eventual nominee continue to fight a primary challenger, prevents them from campaigning against their general election opponent, and puts them at a competitive disadvantage. That is putting self-interest above the welfare of the country.
