if you guys want my opinion (and yes, it's mine, so if you thought of it too, sorry, i didn't steal! 😇 ) okay, here goes: i reckon luna is dumbledore's great niece. no, think abotu it, it makes sense! we know he has a brother, who was in the Order but obviously not as great a wizard as dumbledore. maybethat branch of the family changed dumbledore's intellegent weirdness into luna's, uh, dottiness. so then dumbledore's brother had a son, who grew up around weirdness and came to create the quibbler, a magazine which sides with the Order, thusly luna's dad retains loyalties to his father. in this case, luna's mom would retain her maiden name and, luna would inherit it. OR dumbledore's brother had a daughter, who was luna's mom, and married a man with the last name of lovegood. this would also explain the last name situation.
in overview, dumbledore is cool and weird, luna is cool and weird, i am just plain weird and thusly concocted the theory.

thats the coolest theory ive heard yet!! i want that to happen. and dumbledores brother is always said to be weird... in OotP when moody shows harry the photo.. he says that... thats really cool...
