Angel did indeed lose his original wings in the Mutant Massacre (actually were impaled by Harpoon i think and had to be amputated). But i sincerely doubt he was attempting to commit suicide, but rather was in an airplane rigged to explode when Apocalypse approached him and gave him the option to become Death for him...

ps: of course, i might be wrong...

pps: Also, of all the given options, the only Angel i feel would be suited in order to not be some pop idol teen imbecile is Christian Bale, who i believe has the kind of pain/coldness we see in Angel.
