I have tried and tried to get an avatar but no matter how small the picture this is what it says:

What am I doing wrong?

Says right where you change the avatar; the maximum size of your custom image is 64 by 64 pixels or 20000 bytes, lower the compression!

That's 20k bytes NOT 20 megabytes! Think really really small.
