Is there an age limit to Harry Potter?

Most people would say, of course not! What kind of stupid question is that? But me, I say...why are adults reading a children's book? Or are the majority of you children? Because while reading replies, the majority of you sound quite too intelligent to be pre-teens if you don't mind me saying. So do you deem it appropriate for someone your age (you can say how old you are if you please) to read a fantasy novel about witches? Or should you...grow up and leave HP for your kids/nieces?

I'm 17, and I think it's very weird when I hear of someone out of school who reads Harry Potter, I mean...barely any of my mates read it and think i'm mad for doing so...so why do adults?? What so great about this book that would make adults enjoy it just as much as kids? (don't get me wrong, i'm obssesed wiv Harry Potter!) i even find it weird myself on how much i am into it being the age that i am!

Mind you though! I've also known people much older than myself who love the books. And although Harry Potter may be portrayed as a children's book on the media, it is clear that that is untrue. As JKR stated herself, it is not a children's book. It is for all ages. She states that she wrote the books for herself. Even though i find it weird I don't think that the fact that Harry Potter is about witches has anything to do with it being "childish". LOTR is about all sorts of magically things but it's very much an adult book. Also, I would call the writing style quite adult even if it does have a young protagonist and an easier text to read.

these books then becomeing obsessed myself the first books are kind of
child-ish but as the characters grow the stories become less and less

It was never a child's book. She intended Harry Potter to be for the adults.

It's funny that adults as well as children can be obsessed with Harry Potter. Even actor Jason Issacs said that his friends were into the books and, at first, he thought that they were weird for it. BUt when he go thte part of Lucius Malfoy, he started reading the books and read all 4 books practically nonstop becuse they were so good and addicting. He even said that "They're like crack." LOL

Yes, a lot of people think that Harry Potter is for kids! But, they are not! The first two are only childish because Harry had been naive, young, and innocent then. But, by his third year his innocence was shaken, by the end of his fourth year it was pretty much gone, and by fifth year is was completely and totally GONE!

Now, I read the first book a year after it came out in 1998, I was eight years old. Then I read the second, third, and fourth one when I was nine, the fourth one when I was ten, and the fifth one three years later when I am now thirteen! 😄

You, see their is no age limit.... well, there kind of is, I mean, I can't imagine my nine year old cousin, who is still on the first one reading the fifth Harry Potter book. But, I know some adults that read the Harry Potter books, my French teacher for example.

It is a funny thing that you started this thread, I am reading the book out loud to me mom.... 'cause I wanted to and because you can pick out clues and things better this way, and she was shocked when in OotP the words hell, damn, and effing came up. She was like," I thought this was a kids book?!" and I was like," But, the books grow and mature as Harry does... in the first book there were no swears, but now that Harry is older and more mature there are!"

So, there really is no age limit to an extent anyway, not in my eyes! 😛

I completley agree with lilyginnyblack. Sooo many people I know read them (me being 15) The Harry Potter series (as you and I all know) are brilliant! They each have a great plot, and gives a good definition (with magic involved of course) about what it's like growing up... well minus the flying on broomsticks, wand waving and power hungry dark lord out to get you. Plus they're funny, exciting, and are put together really well. So it's ageless in my opinion.

At 2 moments did I feel the urge to be the "class clown" One was when the work was too easy, and you were bored. The second was when the work was too hard... and you were bored - why not deprive someone elce of their education?

i didnt start reading the books until early june this year (i'm 15 by the way). up until then i had mocked my friends for reading them. i wondered y every1 was so worked up about a book about wizards. i was never a fan of fantasy books and considered myself above magic. it wasnt until my close friend (who i think of as similar 2 myself) read them and told how great she thought they were. thats when i thought we must be more different than i first thought. so i still didnt read them. then 1 day i had 2 quickly grab a book 2 read 4 english. i grabbed the first 1 i saw which happened 2 be harry potter. i reluctantly read it (i was actually only reading it so i could critisize it). instead i loved it and continued to read the 3 others and i was the first 1 in the bookstore 2 get the 5th book which i'd finished before most of my friends had even started. the only thing wrong with this is that i'm now an obessive fan and i have 2 take back anything i ever said about hp.

well i think every1 can like Harry Potter, like i am 13 and me and my friendz r pretty much the only ppl who like harry potter...but i think that every age can like it..

i'm 15 and my sister is 19 and we bother love the books. the movies are a bit different because we like older and better actors, but the books a pretty good

i never read any books let alone the harry potter series untill i was in sainsburys and saw the fourth book going cheap.... (b4 the 5th came out) i had watched the first film and got quite into it do decided to get this book, i know i read them in completely the wrong order, but as soon as i was a few chapters into it i was hooked, i obviously then watched the second in the cinema.........i bought the 5th as soon as it came out...and had finnished it 3 days after i got it...i then read the 3rd then the 1st and 2nd! (mad i know!!!!) but i'm totally hooked, and i never thought that it was possible....i've read each of the books like a million times...but know i'm a reader of all things fictional and fantasy! i love reading and i owe it all to JK. Shame i can't say it to her face!

I'm 17, the little girl I babysit for loves it and shes 8 and one of my teachers loves it and shes 52! so I would say no, thers no age range.

im 14. I think Harry Potter is for all ages. I think older people like it for some of the same reasons kids do. it's a break from the real world. i mean u can really get into it becasue there is magic and alomst anything can happen. i love reading them and like you never know what is going to happen next. i think it's the same way for older people. i think everyone should read the books!! 😄

im 13, and agree with toms chick85,its not like its resticted for ages 2-15 i mean come on, any one should be able to read whatever they want. i read my mothers old romance novels sometimes. and even if i am very mature for my age i still think we can have fun whenever we want.

nope, don't think there's an age limit!! my mates and i are obsessed with HP, and we're past 15... my mum even reads them!!

I assumed they were lame, but my 20-year old brother read them and said they were good. I enjoyed them. I'm 22. I have a 23-year old friend who likes them, as does his 20-year old wife. Another 20-year old friend of mine likes them as well.

lol!! you have a lot of 20somthing year old mates!! but i know wat u mean.....i'm 17. (i know it's slightly different!) never dreamed of reading the books or watching the films, but i t was my nefews that got me into it!
