If this has been discussed LMK where to find it. I searched but could find no topic. If everyone noticed the darkside users of the force use different powers than the light side. If this holds true. Then Force choke is a darkside power. Luke force chokes two gamorreaon guards on his way into jabbas main audience chamber. Someone try to explain this one to me.

Morridini
Well, Force Choking isn't necessarily an Evil Force Power. He didn't use it to kill them, only to get them out of his way. It's nothing different then for example throwing something with the force at a guards head to knock him out cold.

I started a thread like this ages ago.

He was not using the darkside. All Jedi are trained in the different force powers. Including the electricity. Thus Yoda knew to deflect the electricity dooku threw at him.

SithSpy
I think he was using darkside powers and continued to do so up untill his duel with Vader at the end when he goes into a rage and cuts of Vaders hand, then looks at his own robotic hand its like a visual sign of, if you continue down this path you will end up like this...thus the reason he drops his saber and refuses to fight the emperor

Darth_Janus
If Force choking a Gamorrean isn't dark side, I suppose one could force push little kids all day long.

Utter nonsense. Can we have proof dude?

Jedi don't practice lightning or choking. They practice defense. Just because Yoda knew how to defelcet lightning means nothing. Lightning is a physical entity. It's just electrons flying through space at high speed - Yoda just uses the force to move it away or neutralise it.

The movies haven't shown a Jedi using lightning - so they don't use it, simple as that.

Sidious says it himself "The dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider unnatural".

Force choke is a dark side way of using the force. It's just using the force to constrict arteries and blood vessels. No Jedi would ever use that, it's such a painful, terrifying and slow way to kill someone.

ROTJ should have really made it clear whether or not Luke killed the guards or simply choked them to sleep. A Jedi "sleeper hold" is acceptable, but ROTJ makes it look like the guards are dead, rather than asleep.

Darth_Janus
I totally agree. Thanks for making a valid argument, man.

tachie5
Superfly is right. Force Chocke is an offensive aggressive move. I do disagree with the Gamorrean Guards. i think they looked more asleep but that just my opinion. Also they did not attack Luke but only block his way. If they had atacked him it would have been different.

Red Superfly
Yeah, we have to believe that Luke choked them out and they were put to sleep.

It really should have been made clearer though. Just a quick shot of one of them snoring or at least breathing heavily would have done wonders to 100% clarify the scene.

lol it would have been cool if they "tapped out".

SithSpy
damn you red with your wrestling fixation big grin laughing

Red Superfly
Careful, careful, we are on the verge of a hijack......

All crews to their fighters...........

Darth_Janus
I believe the term you're looking for is 'scramble'....

Or am I just waaay out of touch here?

Darth Jello
Force choke? I thought he simply gave them a push and willed them to sleep. that doesn't even resemble a choke. As for other darkside powers, It was my impression that the use of lightning is not a lightside power at all and is something completly unacceptable for Jedi. Yoda mentioned this in ESB-Knowledge and Defense, Never for attack.

Darth_Janus
The Gamorrean was grasping his throat and making noises. I don't know about you, but I don't do that when pushed.

SithSpy
yeah def. a choke, if you watch his hand he even makes the same movement as vader

speiderman
First of all, jedi are taught to use different kinds of powers. In "A New Hope", we see Ben Kenobi use a force heal on an unconscous Luke. Jedi know how to use force choke but normally choose not to use it. It is a bit of an offensive weapon but so is a blaster.

spoiler
In Episode 3, General grievous gets killed by a blaster that obi-wan wields. Jedi use whatever means possible to eliminate danger.

tachie5
Exactly...Go watch that scene again. They are gurgling as if they are trying to breathe.

SithSpy
see my earlier post about luke and the end of ROTJ

speiderman
It is a poorly done scene I will agree. Lucas and the film writers should have made clear in Return of the Jedi if Luke was merely incapacitating the guards or killing them through a force choke.

tachie5
How do we know that is a force heal and not him checking his pulse. He is touching his temple and his wrist. Hes checking to see if he is still alive.

SithSpy
yeah he basically does the same thing that he does in the geonosis arena too fallen jedi

speiderman
Then how come Luke revives several seconds after Kenobi touches him?

Darth_Janus
Cold old man's hands on your face while you're knocked out? Wake about anybody up.

tachie5
As for Luke reviving... when somebody is unconscious they are awakened by being touched or shook.

Fieperskaivu
Luke was never fully trained, and therefore he can do whatever the hell he wants. No one said "don't force choke, its dark side", they just said that Sith use their powers for EVIL. If force choking a gamorrean is evil, shoot me.

Ogami Itto
shooting someone in the head is evil if they present no threat

Shooting someone in the head who is going to kill you is not evil

Shooting someone in the head who is going to kill you after you done something evil to them first is evil tho!

moviejunkie23
notice it takes a little longer for vader to do a full force choke until someone is dead, the guy is struggling to breath a good few moments before they croke to death. Now when luke does that to the gueards they just fall over all fast. I am guessing they dropped for a nap.

By the way thats a cool spoiler about obi killing grievous, i am interested in seeing that now

tachie5
Luke was fully trained enough to know not to use dark side powers.

Lord Shadow Z
I think that even the Jedi on the good side of the force have to use what is deemed an agressive move if they need to. What Luke did to the guards cannot be compared to how Vader choked that officer in ANH or when he killed the officer for failing him in ESB. The difference is Vader was intentionally seeking to cause pain, to actually inflict suffering or death. Luke was using it as a tool to remove a threat and didn't act as if he enjoyed doing it.

Motoss
The claim that Jedi don't use Force Lightning is incorrect. There are actually a few Jedi Masters who use Force Lightning. In sourcebooks, specifically I remember that Ki-Adi-Mundi can use Force Lightning.

Balanced
Just as a point...I believe that in all the movies...Anakin's purpose was to set the force into balance...which would mean no more darkside and lightside...And it is obvious that Luke becomes part of the balancing of the force. Though both the DarkSide and Lightsides still exist, I think Luke has the ability to use both the Light and Darksides. Sometimes there are necessary evils... And I think that the Darkside is exactly that for Luke...a necessay evil when he needs it.

Canadadude
good point. Luke did use the darkside to defeat Vader in ROTJ

Ushgarak
Balanced- no no no no, totally wrong, the oldest mistake in the book

Balance = good = Light Side = Jedi

Imbalance = evil = Dark Side = Sith

To bring Balance, you have to destroy the Sith- on NO account would bringing Balance involve using the Dark Side, as that is the source of the imbalance!

This is from GL himself.

Tangible God
Yeah, maybe balance isn't referred to as a scale.

Maybe it's referred to, stability.

You can't stand on two legs with someone beating you over the kneecaps with a bat. You'll be unstable.

But get rid of the bat and you can balance properly again.

Get it?
