Here's what I want to win:

Little Miss Sunshine - Picture

Paul Greengrass - Directing

Forest Whitaker - Actor

Best Actress - Don't give a shit

Alan Arkin - Supporting Actor

Adriana Barraza - Babel

What I think will win:

Departed will sweet all of it's catagories, or most of them.

I'd rather see Scorsese get his Susan Lucci moment when there aren't any real contenders to his movie. This year, it will be tough. I think the guy is overrated, and I'm willing to be there'll be some sympathy votes coming his way.

BackFire
Certainly, I expect him to win Best Director just because it's "his time".

...Ok.......I'll be good.......

I have to say though, if there's two words that I think couldn't possibly be put in the same sentence, it's "Scorsese" and "overrated".

...crap! I just did it wink

I'm guessing a standing "O" that'll go for at least 1/2 a minute after he gets on stage.

He just has this penchant for making the same movie, in different time periods, until he thinks he'll get it right. Classic Scorsese flaw is him being over analytical of his own movies.

Best Picture - The Departed

Best Director - Martin Scorsese

Best Actor - Forest Whitaker

Best Actress - Helen Mirren

Best Supporting Actor - Mark Wahlberg

Best Supporting Actress - Abigail Breslin

I HOPE the departed wins for Best Picture

I saw both the Departed and Little Miss Sunshine this week and I liked them both, but I loved The Departed

Sunshine was good, but it definitly doesn't deserve to win best picture. Then again most of the movies that win don't deserve best picture erm

Dark horse: Peter O'Toole

I'd agree with those choices, but I'd swap Eddie Murphy for Mark Wahlberg, and my dark horse would be either Abigail Breslin for best supporting actress, or Babel to take some of The Departed's thunder.

Again, I think Scorsese's movie will do well just because 'it's his time'; The Departed is a decent enough movie, but it's not the best movie of last year, and it's certainly not Scorses's best.

manorastroman
the departed may not be scorsese's finest, but it definitely should win best picture. letters from iwo jima is the only close contender. little miss sunshine does not fare well in hindsight. honestly, it's only a bit better than "good".

movie_freak
my picks
Best Picture- The Departed
Best Director- Martin Scorsese
Best Actor- Forest Whitaker
Best Actress- Helen Mirren
Best Supporting Actor- Eddie Murphy
Best Supporting Actress- Jennifer Hudson

Dusty
I honestly don't care. As long as Clint and Martin get something.

I wouldn't mind Nolan getting best cinematog, though.

SnakeEyes
Like some others, I think that Little Miss Sunshine really doesn't deserve to be up there. It is so far away from being best picture material.

MildPossession
As long as The Departed doesn't win a thing, I'm happy.

Not that these things mean anything to me, It's about time an indie feature took the statue home. Scorsese shouldn't win on his namesake alone, or out of pity. I don't think "The Departed" is Oscar material. It's unnecessarily violent, had a weak, tired plot and was way too drawn out for such a simplistic movie. "Babel" has been done 1,000 times before, and in entertaining fashion. "The Queen", I haven't seen. Same for "Letters", but war epics rarely get the nod.

SnakeEyes
For Best Picture, I'd like to see either The Departed or Letters From Iwo Jima get it.

Best Picture - The Departed

Best Director - Martin Scorsese

Best Actor - Forest Whitaker or Leonardo DiCaprio

Best Actress - Helen Mirren

Best Supporting Actor - Mark Wahlberg or Djimon Hounsou

Best Supporting Actress - Don't care really

Solo
Peter O'Toole has it, but Ryan Gosling deserves it.

manorastroman
solo, i didn't realize you were aware of the spacemen 3/spiritualized musical philosophy.

I agree with you on a couple things and disagree with a couple of your points.

First off, these things really don't mean a thing, like you said, but I'm assuming you're just somewhat taking an interest in it because it's fun (like I am). Also, I would very much like to see an indie film get an Oscar for Best Picture, but I just don't think Little Miss Sunshine is that movie. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was great, but just... not Oscar Material... it was no masterpiece or anything. Just a fun little film with a nice message to it.

The Departed was a lot better (in terms of who should win an Oscar) than Little Miss Sunshine, in my opinion. I respect your opinion of the movie, but personally, I think it was done fairly well and good enough to get the Oscar. It had good acting, a decent storyline, an ending you never saw coming, and it was entertaining. Not to mention the directing was above average, in my opinion.

I wouldn't mind Letters From Iwo Jima getting it either. wink

With all of that being said, I'm not that interested in the Oscars this year. The line-up (for most categories) seems really... weak, I think.

Dusty
HOLY SHIT.

The Departed won!

Impediment
I was almost 100% that Peter O'Toole would win his "Mercy" Oscar.

Grimm22
Pretty predictable outcome erm

Although there is no way that "I need to wake up" deserved to win best original song. It only won because the academy would give best picture to an inconvenient truth if it could

Same with Happy Feet, a crappy movie that only won because of its environmental message

im sure some little whingeing prick will cry "merge" and u can close this but it deserves a temporary thread of its own at least

My thoughts exactly. I said tomy girlfriend that if he didn't win for "Goodfellas", he shouldn't nab it for "The Departed". But, congrats all the same. Best Picture was a bit of a surprise, though.

Happy to see Alan Arkin take one as well. I've liked him since "Slums of Beverly Hills".

WrathfulDwarf
The Oscars were on last nigth? ... wow..blink

MildPossession
Terribly disappointing for the most, especially Monster House losing out to Happy Feet...

botankus
Last year, all I wanted to win was March of the Penguins and Wallace and Gromit. Needless to say, that 2-for-2 performance sent me to bed a happy man.

They were pretty popular weren't they? In the UK, I mean?

Strangelove
Well, these were my choices for my Oscar pool:

Picture: Departed
Director: Scorsese
Actor: Forest Whitaker
Actress: Helen Mirren
Sup. Actor: Eddie Murphy (I only backed him because he was the favorite, I'm very happy Arkin won)
Sup. Actress: Jennifer Hudson
