I'd rather see Scorsese get his Susan Lucci moment when there aren't any real contenders to his movie. This year, it will be tough. I think the guy is overrated, and I'm willing to be there'll be some sympathy votes coming his way.
He just has this penchant for making the same movie, in different time periods, until he thinks he'll get it right. Classic Scorsese flaw is him being over analytical of his own movies.
I'd agree with those choices, but I'd swap Eddie Murphy for Mark Wahlberg, and my dark horse would be either Abigail Breslin for best supporting actress, or Babel to take some of The Departed's thunder.
Again, I think Scorsese's movie will do well just because 'it's his time'; The Departed is a decent enough movie, but it's not the best movie of last year, and it's certainly not Scorses's best.

the departed may not be scorsese's finest, but it definitely should win best picture. letters from iwo jima is the only close contender. little miss sunshine does not fare well in hindsight. honestly, it's only a bit better than "good".
my picks
Best Picture- The Departed
Best Director- Martin Scorsese
Best Actor- Forest Whitaker
Best Actress- Helen Mirren
Best Supporting Actor- Eddie Murphy
Best Supporting Actress- Jennifer Hudson

Not that these things mean anything to me, It's about time an indie feature took the statue home. Scorsese shouldn't win on his namesake alone, or out of pity. I don't think "The Departed" is Oscar material. It's unnecessarily violent, had a weak, tired plot and was way too drawn out for such a simplistic movie. "Babel" has been done 1,000 times before, and in entertaining fashion. "The Queen", I haven't seen. Same for "Letters", but war epics rarely get the nod.
