Oooh, hard to pick from the old Hewson days... Uridium, Alleykat, Morpheus...

Wizball had some amazing music actually. In fact, the Commodore 64 had by far the best sound chip of its era.

Impediment
Mega Man 2's entire score and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest.

Anyway, I would defintely add Mega Man 3 and 4 to this list as well as the Japanese version of Castlevania III and the two Metal Gear games on MSX. Oh, and Duck Tales on NES.

Kosmic King
Pokemon Gold & Silver Battle with Lance and Red. Then the soundtrack of Kirby's Adventure!

Ridley_Prime
One that comes to mind is Kraid's theme in the original Metroid, in addition to those pokeymanz ones mentioned.

These deserve mention as well.

There are so many but Battletoads just might win based on the pause music alone.

Demonic Phoenix
Battletoads Pause Music? Nahh, I like the level 1 theme more.

smile That brings back some fond memories. Ghosts & Goblins and Battletoads are the only games that ever made me damage my console.

Imo, The Spring Yard Zone in Sonic and the password song for Megaman 3 are my wins.

Correction, Battletoads had SOME of the best music in the era, not THE best. There are some 8 bit tunes out there that are better than the music in battletoads, but meh, all comes down to personal opinion.

The one for the first level from Ghouls and Ghosts.

BloodRawEngine
While I think Streets of Rage was 16-bit, I just need to mention that its level 1 background music was burned into my subcranium since my childhood.

That's the 8-bit version CD release by Squaresoft.

The original version from the SNES is 16-bit.

And yet the 8-bit version of Green Hill from the Master System game was better than the 16-bit one.

I'd also like again that people should specifiy which system. music could vary radically by country especially between NES/Famicom/Disk System games.

You've gotta be kidding me......

erm

Darth Jello
Just an illustrations of some differences-

Prelude from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse

O_I7Dh4ogsM

Prelude from Akumajo Densetsu, the Japanese version of the same game for the Famicom.

h2JWRJZwvJo

So far from what I've seen, the games with the biggest discrepancies are mainly games that were released in Japan on the Disk System or had extra sound chips in their cartridges. The big ones are Metroid, both NES Zelda games, Castlevania II and III. Also, though the Japanese versions are generally better, it's not always the case or it's a toss up.

I like the high melody and reverb on it much more than the 16-bit. It just seems more appropriate.

Kosmic King
Two more...

*The Mario Theme
*The sound track of FFIII (though I've only played the DS remake, I liked the soundtrack)

Which do you like better? This is the version of the main theme from the original Famicom Disk System release of the first game. The first and second game have pretty significant sound effects and music differences between NES and Disk System and Zelda II has a completely different battle theme and level design.
