What? I did a search and no Descent? Shame, shame.
Anyway, I watched this movie last week and it was awesome. I typically do not like horror movies, but this one is set with an Aliens type atmostphere. It also had some great homages (such as Carrie and Deliverance). I highly recommend this horror/thriller film. Plus its much better than Marshall's crappy Dog Soldiers.

there is a thread. and yes the search function is shit. bring back the old search function

No, that was meant to be Descent but I messed up and never bothered to fix it.
Wolfie
I just saw it today. I liked it a lot. As a personal preference, I liked Dog Soldiers better, but I can understand anyone liking The Descent better.
My only beef with the movie was how long it took to introduce the crawlers. It took 40-60 minutes to bring them into the picture and by that time, the mood and theme should already be set, a thiller cave movie. It took them too long to introduce a supernatural element to the mix.
Also, the very end bothered me. What the hell was that in the passenger seat? What purpose did that give the film? It just seemed like an unnecessary five seconds.
Those were two very minor details that bothered me. Other than that, great movie. I'll be looking forward to Neil Marshall's next movie, and hopefully it'll get a earlier US release date.
MildPossession
They changed the ending for the American release, don't know why at all, the ending for the original British release is just fine.

Is that like the new word???????
'Gay'???? WTF?
That's like the most lousy expression EVER!
By the way The Descent was a great movie, Smeagols and all!
Solo
I'll have to see the American ending.
Wolfie
Could someone post the British ending?
I hope it'll be on the US DVD release.

It's not new. I recall all the immature assholes in grade school using that word as the universal negative term, which really make absolutely no sense, as the definition of "gay" doesn't mean anything negative.
BackFire
Can't wait too see this movie, will be going next week when my friend, who also wants to see it, comes back from out of town.
MildPossession
I'm sure I read somewhere that they were putting both endings on the region one dvd release?
allofyousuckkk
they should put it on one dvd. I'm going to see it tomorrow night, although I'm dissapointed the ending is different.

I saw this movie on friday and I loved it

bigsnuff
I saw this movie on Friday night, and I thought it was great. The cool thing was, so did every other person in the theater.

Thank God someone else sees it my way!!
thanks Wolfie!

This was such a beautiful horror movie.
It had an amazing claustrophobic atmosphere, tension you could cut with a knife, some of the most unnerving monsters I've ever seen, and some of the best use of blood and violence I've seen. The gore was impressive and used often, but never to the point where it felt the movie was relying on that factor to be cool. The atmosphere and creatures were always the most affecting things in the movie. This movie was probably the best horror film I've ever had the pleasure of seeing in the theater.
See this immediately if you even have a passing interest in horror, and if you're a horror fan who's been underwhelmed by the recent horror releases this year, then prepare to have your faith in the genre reinvigorated.
MildPossession
It's one of a few films too where I have more or less liked every character, no one got on my nerves out of the group of women. And It was so sad when my favourite character Beth was killed

urgh.

The Descent is one of the better horror movies, especially in recent years.

Loved this movie (saw it ages ago, no idea why i didnt post here before), and living in ireland, i have the dvd with the full ending... to be honest i'm a sucker for a happy ending, but i liked this one...
shame juno died though...
MildPossession
I like our cover on the dvd too, do not like the American poster at all.
Zilverz
I like the american ending better
I much prefer her making it out alive and just have some further psychological damage .. which i would expect from such tramatic events she has been put through..
The UK Ending
At first I totally didnt like it. After thinking about it for a while, it kind of fit with her previous hallucinations and her friend telling her to "find her own way out" so that did kind of flow but im sorry .. once those things started chewing on her she would have snapped out of that hallucination and be hating life
Wolfie
I like the UK ending because it finished the birthday cake hallucinations. That's not the only reason but that's the main reason. That was really important and should've been left in.

Ditto.

i definantly like the UK ending a lot better then the US ending...
but i really liked the movie, it moved too slow for me at first, but then picked up, which was good. sometimes i couldnt tell what was going on in some scenes, but other from that i really liked it
Darth Vicious
I think this similar to the cave except much better, I wish they had gone into more detail with Juno's affair with Sarahs husband abit more, I see why he did it, Juno was hot it was a shame she died, I liked her character even though she had an affair with Sarahs man she wasnt gonna leave her behind and Beths death was an accident. With the american ending I was expecting one of the Crawlers to pop out from the backseat and with the UK ending, Does that mean that she dies?. I thought the gore involving her daughter was too much, she couldve died from the impact or whatever.

Ok, I just watched that UK ending for the first time, and I must say that I don't like it as much because of the uncertainty it leaves. I liked feeling that it was all real.
janus77
saw it the other day, bored me.
not very tense, suspenseful or frightening.
the occasional bit of claustrophobia was all I came away with.
very unsatisfactory film... worse than Dog Soldiers.
Myers Kicks Ass
i watched the the first hour and turned it off it was sooooo boring
The Machine
I really liked this movie. There was a few things I would change but all in all it was good.

well duh, the first half hour sucks, cuz they have to get you to know all the characters better so when they kill em in the rest of the movie you feel for em and stuff. jeez
allofyousuckkk
i am soooo lost by the ending, could someone clarify the uk ending as well as the us one for me?
Ya, im a dumbass, I know

The UK ending is here:

It's basically just extended a couple minutes. It's much better than the US ending.

Just came back from seeing this movie, a UK import. I had heard of Neil Marshall and his previous film Dog Soldiers, but I was going to pass because I kept thinking of that other film The Cave; plus, it's so hard to find horror films that are good films as well. The strong reviews from major critics made me rethink, and so I went to the theatre for my first horror movie in years.
A brief synopsis, with minor spoilers:
The film follows a group of six women on a caving expedition in the Appalachian Mountains. Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) is recovering from a car accident a year ago, which killed her husband and daughter. She and her friend, Beth, (Alex Reid) are invited to the Appalachian Mountains by Juno (Natalie Mendoza). There they join up with Holly (Nora-Jane Noone), and two sisters, Sam (MyAnna Buring) and Rebecca (Saskia Mulder).
After stopping in a cabin for the night, they drive to the caves and begin to explore. A cave-in blocks the way they came in, and it is revealed that Juno has brought them to an unexplored cave system in a misguided effort to bring the group closer together. They continue on as their only hope is to find another exit. Holly breaks her leg in a fall and, as the others assist her, Sarah wanders off and sees a pale humanoid figure drinking from a puddle of stagnant water. It disappears into the darkness when it senses her, and when Sarah tells the others, they dismiss it as a hallucination.
I won't say any more. After you get past the Deliverence comparisons early on (Deliberate echoes?), it becomes a very well made film, with characters who are smart and change as they become desperate.
I could always use less gore - the scariest films make your imagination work more than what you could see - but it was quite well used.
SelphieT
hmm, maybe I'll see it then

Vash_4_prez
This was one of the better horror movies to come out this year (which isnt saying much after reviewing this year's lackluster horror releases, but I digress) and Marshall is a guy to look out for now. Dog Soldiers was a kick ass werewolf flick that rocked harder than those CGI pups in Underworld could ever dream of, and The Descent was just as bad ass. It's hard as hell for me to construct believable female characters, but Marshall has nothing but strong ladies in this flick (and off topic, the leader is hot as hell, but, again, I digress). The movie had fear and suspense way before the first creature even appeared. Any creature flick that let you down in the past couple of years (Village anybody?) is slaughtered by this film.
